Ikeys player faces disciplinary for punch
Video footage has emerged of a rugby player assaulting a female during a brawl.
CAPE TOWN - The University Of Cape Town says an Ikeys player, who allegedly assaulted a female student, will have to face a disciplinary tribunal.
The 21-year-old woman was punched in the face during a brawl involving rugby players from UCT and the North West University on Monday night.
The fight broke out at a fast food outlet after the Varsity Cup rugby final in Potchefstroom.
Irini Agathagelou was punched in the face, allegedly by an Ikeys player, during the brawl.
UCT vice chancellor, Dr Max Price, says disciplinary charges will be instituted against the player in question today.
"We will have a disciplinary tribunal. I hope it will happen within days."
Price says a decision will be reached on the player's fate after hearing both sides of the story.
"To the extent that there is another side is that some sort of team of security people were spraying pepper spray to try to break up the fight and that the perpetrator may not have been able to see properly."
If found guilty, the Ikeys player could be banned from representing the institution's rugby team.
The video of the alleged brawl has since been removed from all social media sites.
