Real take on Bayern in Champions League
The draw for the UEFA Champions League took place in Switzerland today.
CAPE TOWN - Tournament favourites Real Madrid were paired against defending champions Bayern Munich in the draw for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League that took place in Nyon, Switzerland, today.
The star-studded clash will pit Pep Guardiola's treble-chasing Bavarians against the nine-time European champions in the dream draw for fans of European football, while 2012 winners Chelsea will face tournament dark-horses Atletico Madrid in the other semi-final.
Former Barcelona coach Guardiola, in his first season in charge of the German giants, will resume his well-documented rivalry with Los Blancos. Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will have be eager to help his side advance through the tie, with a place in the final in Lisbon - Ronaldo's home town - on offer to the winners.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who managed Real Madrid from 2010-2013, will be enticed by the prospect of facing his former employers in the final. But his side will need to overcome Atletico Madrid if they are to reach their second final in three years.
Diego Simeone's side have been the surprise package in this season's tournament, and the ease with which they dispatched the mighty Barcelona in the previous round will give the 'Special One' cause for concern. The fast, powerful styles employed by both teams should make for a fiery encounter, while Atletico striker Diego Costa will be keen to impress against the Londoners, who are reported to be chasing the Spaniard's signature in the upcoming transfer window.
The draw for the semi-finals of the Europa League pitted Sevilla against Valencia in an all-Spanish affair, while Benfica will face Italian giants Juventus. The Old Lady will be going all out to advance to the final, which takes place in the Juventus Stadium in Turin in May.
The first legs of the Champions League semi-finals take place on Tuesday 22 April, with the return leg a week later. The Europa league clashes take place on Thursday 24 April, with the return legs on 1 May.
