CAPE TOWN - Some Saldanha Bay residents said the community is being held hostage by youth gangs.

Gang violence has gripped the Diazville fishing community since last year.

A turf war between two rival gangs flared up earlier this month and at least 20 arrests have been made in recent days in connection with the ensuing violence.

Over the past few days public violence related to gangsterism has cast a shadow over the streets of Diazville.

A number of houses were torched, petrol bombs were thrown across busy streets and gangsters threw stones at authorities.

Resident Monique Arense, whose house was damaged in gang warfare, says she lives in fear.

"We're unsafe because they fire real guns and throw petrol bombs. We don't know what to expect or when to expect it."

Police are still hunting for at least 20 more suspects linked to the public violence.
