JOHANNESBURG - A man has been arrested in connection with the murder and mutilation of a 15-year-old girl from Relela outside Tzaneen, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

The teen's murder in January sparked violent protests in the area, which resulted in the deaths of around five people.

The 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody earlier in the day.

Police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says the man is also linked to the rape of another young girl from a nearby village.

"Preliminary investigations have also linked the suspect to a case of rape of a 13-year-old. We are currently still busy interviewing the suspect."

The man will appear in court on Thursday.
