JOHANNESBURG - The union representing most workers at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says chairperson Pansy Tlakula must resign as she is a liability to the organisation.

But National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) also says its members shouldn't go on strike in a bid to force her to step down.

Last week, a number of opposition parties said Tlakula should leave the commission after the Public Protector found her guilty of maladministration over a leasing deal for the commission's new offices.

Nehawu's Sizwe Pamla said, "In principle Pansy Tlakula is a liability to the IEC. She needs to go. She needs to resign. If not, Parliament has got a mandate and responsibility to hold her to account and push her to step aside."
