Igesund names squad for Australasia friendlies
Bafana Bafana will play international friendly matches against Australia and New Zealand in May.
CAPE TOWN - Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has announced his 18-man squad to play international friendly matches against Australia and New Zealand next month.
South Africa will face the Socceroos of Australia on 26 May in Sydney, followed by the clash against the All Whites of New Zealand four days later (30 May) in Auckland.
Bafana Bafana last met New Zealand in 2009 in the Confederations Cup, with South African winning 2-0 in Rustenburg, while South Africa and Australia played out a 2-2 stalemate in London in 2008 in the last clash between the sides.
"These matches are an integral part of the association's vision to have Bafana Bafana play against some of the top sides in the world. For us to have a strong Bafana Bafana we will have to face these big footballing nations. We have already played the likes of Spain and Brazil, and we have lined more high-profile games which we will unveil with time," said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan.
The squad will assemble on 19 May, and will have two training sessions at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto before departing for Sydney on 22 May.
Bafana Bafana return to South Africa on 1 June.
"I believe I have selected players capable of doing us proud Down Under in the two matches. We are also happy to have been given the opportunity to assist Australia in their preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil. This is a chance we could not miss. We hope our match will be of great assistance," said Igesund.
