Drug mule confirmed as SA citizen
The woman was arrested in Thailand on Thursday after she was found in possession of cocaine.
JOHANNESBURG - A woman arrested for alleged drug trafficking in Thailand last week is a South African citizen, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old was arrested on Thursday after being found in possession of seven kilogrammes of cocaine.
South African authorities are still waiting to meet with her.
The department says it will facilitate contact with her family and a legal representative if she needs it.
Ministry spokesperson Nelson Kgwete says the department's efforts to make contact were delayed due to a public holiday.
"Yesterday [Monday] was a public holiday in Thailand and officials couldn't get access to the woman. Officials have returned to the facility today [Tuesday] to meet her."
Last month, convicted drug mule Tessa Beetge returned home after serving almost half of her 12-year prison sentence in a Brazilian prison.
Note: An earlier version of this article stated the International Relations & Cooperation Department would offer the woman legal representation. This was incorrect. The department only facilitates contact with a lawyer if necessary.
