JOHANNESBURG - A 19-year-old Gauteng mother accused of abandoning her 16-month-old baby on the N1 highway is expected to be formally charged today.

The young woman will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court this morning.

The child was rescued by traffic police after he was almost hit by a truck while walking alone on the highway near the Grasmere offramp on Thursday night.

The mother was arrested at the weekend at a friend's house while her child has been taken care of at a home for children.

Both the mother and the child received counselling separately.

The court has been approached to look at the possibility of placing the child in the grandmother's custody.

The child was assessed by doctors and there have been no signs of abuse.
