Cable theft leads to death of Paarl girl (6)
Six-year-old Reitumetsi Maroba stepped on an exposed electrical wire and was electrocuted.
CAPE TOWN - The Drakenstein Municipality said residents connecting to electricity illegally was a huge problem in informal settlements in the area.
The municipality made these comments after the death of a six-year-old girl.
Reitumetsi Maroba was electrocuted by an exposed wire at the Fairyland informal settlement in Paarl East.
She'd been walking to the shop with other children when she stepped on an exposed electrical wire attached to a corrugated iron shack.
Maroba, who lives in Delft with her mother, was on holiday at her aunt's house in Paarl when the incident occurred.
The municipality's Johann Mettler said the incident is being investigated.
"It's very difficult to prevent this kind of thing from happening because as soon as we disconnect such illegal connections, they are rewired again. But we are busy with an ongoing process to educate the people and also to disconnect such connections."
