N1 Highway child's mother expected in court
The mother who abandoned her child on the N1 Highway is being held in police custody.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng social workers are helping police find out why a 19-year-old mother abandoned her toddler on the N1 highway last week.
The woman is being held at the Orange Farms Police Station ahead of her first court appearance on Monday.
The two-year-old old boy was almost hit by a truck while walking on the highway, close to the Grassmere off ramp last Wednesday night.
The Gauteng Social Development Department's Sello Mokoena says social workers will now try to speak to the young mother, to understand what pushed her to allegedly abandon her child.
"We'll try to understand her mind-set as to why she tried to take that kind of step. I also think she was desperate."
The boy is now being taken care of at a child care facility.
The department has also approached the courts to determine whose foster care the child should be released to.
Mokoena says after a doctor's assessment it appears the child did not sustain any previous physical abuse.
