CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department says it is concerned about the number of child deaths in the province.

The department plans to launch an independent investigation into the death of a two-month-old infant in Elsies River.

The baby girl's body was found at her grandmother's house in Elsberg Court.

It's alleged the baby was raped but her mother insists this is not the case.

Social Development MEC Albert Fritz says, "Whatever evidence they obtain will be given over to the police so that we can charge someone with child neglect, so that we can secure some kind of conviction in this matter because the message must go out that this must stop."

No arrests have been made.

In another incident at the beginning of this week, drain cleaners found the body of a newborn baby while cleaning a sewerage pipe in Gugulethu.
