Hugh Masekela celebrates 75th in NYC

The two-time Grammy-nominated SA artist celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday.

NEW YORK - Hugh Masekela celebrated his 75th birthday in New York City on Friday night, alongside the likes of Paul Simon and Sibongile Khumalo.

The two-time Grammy-nominated artist performed a special show in the city, where he spent many years in exile during apartheid.

With his mentor Harry Belafonte and his son Sal in the audience, Masekela performed his hit songs and paid tribute to Nelson Mandela as well.

He told Eyewitness News at 75 he is not slowing down.

"We finish at the new jazz Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, then I go home and we do two concerts, then we play in Nigeria, Cuba, Trinidad and Europe."

Masekela will also perform tonight in New York City.
