Highway toddler at home for children
The two-year-old was nearly hit by a truck at night on the highway close to the Grasmere off-ramp.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Social Development Department says the toddler who was abandoned by his mother on the N1 highway is now safe at a home for children.
The two-year-old boy was nearly hit by a truck on Wednesday night on the highway close to the Grasmere off-ramp.
The mother is in police custody.
The department's Sello Mokoena says the toddler has been examined by doctors.
He says there's no indication yet to make authorities believe the child had been abused in the past.
"Whenever you have such a case, we would have to try and make sure that this particular child is returned to the family.
"In this particular case we are talking to the grandmother."
The 19-year-old mother is expected to appear in court soon on charges of child neglect.
