Abalone smugglers busted in Botrivier

Three men were caught with abalone to the value of more than R2 million.

FILE: Police arrested three men in a Nissan light delivery vehicle just outside Botrivier on the N2 for being in possession of 31 bags of abalone.

CAPE TOWN - Three men have been arrested near Botrivier in the Western Cape on Saturday after they were caught with abalone to the value of more than R2 million.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says officials stopped the trio early this morning during routine road blocks to clamp down on the transportation of drugs and other illegal goods.

"Early this morning we arrested three men in a Nissan light delivery vehicle just outside Botrivier on the N2 for being in possession of 31 bags of abalone."

Meanwhile traffic officers stopped just over a thousand motorists in roadblocks across the province last night and tested the alcohol levels of about half of them.

Africa adds a total of eight drunk drivers were arrested.
