JOHANNESBURG - Angry Eldorado Park residents gathered in their numbers as a man accused of murdering and possibly raping a local woman made his first appearance in the Protea Magistrates Court on Friday.

Richard Mutsie is accused of killing 31-year-old Christel Pienaar.

The woman's body was discovered at the Silver Oaks Secondary School on Wednesday.

The mother of five was stabbed several times and was partially undressed when her body was discovered by a passer-by.

A total of eight people were initially taken in for questioning in connection with the crime.

It's understood Mutsie was the last person seen with Pienaar.

The court was filled to capacity with residents wanting to get a glimpse of the suspect.

Outside, demonstrators sang and held up posters condemning violence against women, with several bearing the image of Western Cape teenager Anene Booysen.

She was raped, mutilated and left for dead in Bredasdorp.

Pienaar's husband attended proceedings but was too overcome with emotion to comment.

Mutsie refused legal representation for his upcoming trial, choosing to represent himself instead.

But the court told him to reconsider ahead of his bail application next week Friday.

The suspect will remain in custody until then.
