Baby found on N1 highway
Police suspect the infant was dropped off there since there are no houses nearby.
JOHANNESBURG - A 16-month-old baby has been rescued by traffic police after he was found walking by himself on the N1 highway near the Grasmere offramp last night.
Police suspect the toddler, who was almost hit by a truck, was dropped off there since there are no houses nearby.
Gauteng traffic police's Busaphi Nxumalo says the child's mother has still not been traced and he's being kept at a police station.
"Trucks were swerving from the baby and the person who has done that is very cruel."
The Gauteng Social Development Department says it will provide medical assistance to the toddler.
Social development's Shoki Tshabalala said, "We'll ensure we provide medical assessment and placement soon. We'll also check the area where the baby was found so we can raise awareness about finding the baby's mother."
