Chamber ‘shocked’ by cargo duty hike
The 5,9 percent increase came into effect on Tuesday and is the biggest increase in several years.
CAPE TOWN - The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday said it is shocked by a sudden increase in container cargo duties at ports.
The 5,9 percent hike came into effect today.
It's the biggest increase in several years.
The chamber's Janine Myburgh says it's unacceptable as the Port Regulator of South Africa only announced the hike on Monday.
"The ports have been Transnet's cash cows for many years and we were without a doubt the most expensive port to use in the world."
