Group approaches court over textbooks

The group says 39 Limpopo schools haven’t received textbooks for the 2014 academic year.

Section 27 says 39 Limpopo schools haven’t received textbooks for the 2014 academic year.

CAPE TOWN - Textbooks have still not been delivered to at least 39 Limpopo schools for the 2014 academic year, non-governmental organisation Section 27 said on Monday.

This despite claims by the Basic Education Department that 100 percent of book deliveries have been made.

Community based organisation Basic Education for All and several affected schools say this hasn't happened.

Basic Education for All says it will approach the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday in order to compel officials to complete deliveries.

The group's Tebogo Sephakgamela says they will seek an order to force both national and provincial officials to deliver within a week.

"This [issue] affects our learners."

In 2012, Section 27 approached the courts to force the department to deliver workbooks.

An earlier version of this story said Section 27 was taking the department to court. Instead, Section 27 is the legal representative of another organisation Basic Education for All who lodged the application.
