CAPE TOWN - The Mayor of the Tlokwe Municipality has been charged with drunk and negligent driving after he was arrested by traffic officials in Cape Town over the weekend.

It's believed the mayor was on his way back from the Cape Town International Jazz Festival when he was arrested in Elsies River.

The City of Cape Town's JP Smith says the man was caught driving on the wrong side of the road and refused to cooperate with officials after he was stopped.

"He was asked to do a breathalyser test, which he was unable to do."

The man is only expected to appear in court later this year.
