CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department says the first term has been a successful one, but there are still some areas of concern.

The first school term concluded on Friday with learners heading back to the classroom in a little more than week.

The safety of Manenberg schools proved to be a headache for the education department as gang warfare continued in the area.

Security had to be improved at the schools after some teaching staff approached the courts.

Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant says, "There's a good working relationship between the SAPS and ourselves. We've also completed capex for fencing at the 14 schools.

"We had 10 schools out of the 14 completed two weeks ago and the final four schools which were scheduled for completion last Thursday on the 26th."
