JOHANNESBURG - Police have welcomed a life sentence handed down to a Limpopo man who raped a five-year-old child in the Tzaneen area in 2011.

Masilo Maenetja was also handed a five year jail term in the Naphuno Magistrates Court last Friday for kidnapping the girl.

The 28-year-old man abducted the girl who was playing by a gate outside her home before taking her to his house and raping her repeatedly.

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi says the sentence will assist in the fight against child abuse.

"I'm quite sure the sentence will send a good message to would be rapists or kidnappers of young kids. It also instills courage with the justice system that perpetrators will be dealt with aggressively."
