‘No space in schools’ for Mitchells Plain kids
Trevor Manuel says more needs to be done to accommodate children who are migrating to schools in the area.
CAPE TOWN - The ANC's Mitchells Plain Constituency leader Trevor Manuel says more needs to be done to accommodate additional children who are migrating to schools in the sprawling area.
Manuel took part in an education summit to discuss the issue yesterday.
He said people are drawn to the area due to the growing number of low cost homes being built.
By the beginning of the school year, hundreds of pupils were unable to be placed in schools due to a lack of space in classrooms.
Manuel says a local education forum has instructed its legal counsel to look into the matter.
"The Mitchells Plain Education Forum has briefed lawyers to litigate in the interest of ensuring there is adequate planning because when one looks at the number of houses being constructed, there isn't an equivalent in the number of classrooms being built to accommodate the learners from those new houses."
