CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town gender rights activist says she is appalled by the death of a Ceres man who was killed allegedly because he is gay.

A 28-year-old man appeared in court earlier this week in connection with the murder.

He allegedly tortured and killed the 21-year-old last weekend.

A group of young people were reportedly invited to watch the attack.

Funeka Soldaat, founder of Free Gender, an LGBT rights organisation, says it's not okay to kill people because of their gender orientation.

"It's a very painful thing especially at this time of our democracy."
