‘Tlakula must stand down'
The Centre for the Study of Democracy and Agang SA called for the IEC chairperson’s head.
CAPE TOWN - Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Pansy Tlakula should step down immediately, Centre for the Study of Democracy Director Steven Friedman said on Thursday.
An independent investigation found Tlakula acted improperly in securing office space for the IEC back in 2010.
Earlier this month, she once again defended herself, saying various probes into the allegations did not find her guilty of corruption.
With elections just over a month away, calls for her to step down are being echoed from several quarters.
Friedman says the IEC has a crucial role in ensuring elections are free and fair.
He says Tlakula shouldn't be beyond reproach.
The director says there can't be any doubt over her credibility.
"She should step down because elections are about trust. You need to have an electoral commission which is trusted by all the parties."
Newcomer on the political scene Agang SA on Thursday called for Tlakula and two other IEC officials to vacate their posts before the 7 May polls.
