CAPE TOWN - A man accused of raping and setting alight a nine-year-old Delft girl has also been changed with murder.

The 27-year-old appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Supporters from various political parties packed the public gallery along with relatives of the child.

He allegedly raped and then set alight Elihle Hlanjwa two months ago.

She died from her injuries last week and will be laid to rest on Friday.

The man was initially charged with rape and attempted murder.

Hlanjwa's family has repeatedly called for decisive justice.

A series of violent attacks on women and children have been reported across the Cape Peninsula this year.

Meanwhile, the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children says the only way to curb the problem is to ensure incidents are reported.
