JOHANNESBURG - Lions forward Franco van der Merwe on Wednesday told EWN Sport that despite being sidelined with a long-term injury, he would still like to operate in a consultancy role with the team.

The lock underwent surgery on Monday after suffering an ankle tear during Saturday's match against the Reds.

He is expected to be out for up to six months.

Van der Merwe says he doesn't want his injury to sideline him completely.

"I would definitely like to be involved with the team, especially with the lineouts in terms of analysis, video work and keeping the guys on their toes."

Van der Merwe says the upcoming schedule actually assists him with getting through the initial stages of his recovery.

"If I'm correct, in the next five weeks we have two byes, so that's going to help a little bit. Then we have the incoming tour in June, which is another four weeks during which I can recover and get fit."
