JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have destroyed more than 5,000 illegal firearms, about 55,000 knives and other dangerous weapons in Vereeniging.

The weapons were seized during blitz operations between April last year and February 2014.

Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba says, "We destroyed about 5,363 firearms, of which 67 percent were illegal firearms confiscated by the police during special operations and day-to-day operations."
