CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says new employment equity regulations will have a profound impact on job creation in the Western Cape, if they are implemented.

Delivering her department's R1,7 billion budget speech on Monday in the provincial legislature, Zille said the regulations needed to be changed.

The Western Cape premier said the region's demographics were very different from the national figures.

She said the province was seeking legal advice on whether certain sections of the Employment Equity Act and the draft regulations were lawful and Constitutional.

According to the premier, the regulations specify how an employer's compliance with employment equity should be determined.

She concluded that once they had obtained legal advice, they would announce what further steps of action they would take.
