CAPE TOWN - A case of abduction and rape has been opened after an attack on a three-year-old girl in Mfuleni, Cape Town police confirmed on Tuesday.

The girl was allegedly lured away while playing in front of her home on Sunday.

Later that day, two women brought the child home after they found her crying at a nearby squatter camp.

Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk says no arrests have been made.

"After the mother got suspicious of the girl's behaviour and took her for medical assistance, it was later established the girl was raped."

The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Women's Network says South Africa will not be free until violence against women and children comes to an end.

It held candlelight vigils across the country on Friday in honour of women and children affected by violence.

A gathering took place at the Delft police station in memory of a nine-year-old girl who died in hospital after she was raped and set alight.

Earlier this month, a three-year-old Delft girl was raped, allegedly by her neighbour.
