Spur buys stake in meat processing co.

JOHANNESBURG -The Spur Group has acquired a 30% stake in Braviz Fine Foods, that will establish a new world-class meat processing facility in Johannesburg specialising in processing rib cuts for R36 million.

Pierre van Tonder, CEO of The Spur Group says the company sources ribs from Europe as because it has a particular specification that is unfortunately not available in South Africa.

He says the world rib market is very specialised and is vulnerable to supply-and-demand factors.

Van Tonder says although the product is being imported, 700 tonnes of ribs will be manufactured in South Africa per month.

"We will continue to import raw product but will all be locally manufactured in terms of the cooking process and adding the sources and so forth."

He says at that type of volume, it's not just for Spur but also for the general market.

Van Tonder says Braviz Fine Foods have been in the industry for a long time and are "very much clued up from a technical perspective and a production side".

Braviz is currently building a R120 million meat processing plant in Johannesburg.
