JOHANNESBURG - Laboratory services in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have been suspended by the National Health Laboratory Service after the provincial health departments failed to meet their financial commitments.

Service suspensions will be rolled out over the next few weeks meaning blood samples and other specimen that need to be tested will not be collected from state clinics and hospitals.

Diagnostic pathology services and specimen testing will also be suspended in the coming weeks.

The Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa's Michelle Connolly says this is a matter of great concern for the average person.

"If a blood sample is taken from a person and not collected, the person won't be diagnosed and without diagnosis, he or she won't receive the correct treatment."
