CAPE TOWN - A police officer has been arrested for the illegal possession of abalone and crayfish near Hermanus.

The officer and his wife were arrested on Wednesday after authorities received information of abalone which was being stored at a house in Fisherhaven.

The estimated street value of the seized perlemoen has been put at more than R1 million.

The police's Frederik van Wyk said, "A boat and vehicle were confiscated and handed in as exhibits. The abalone was handed in to the Department of Fisheries and Forestry and the suspect is going to appear in the Hermanus Magistrates Court soon."
