JOHANNESBURG - Coach Ray Jennings on Tuesday praised the maturity shown by his U19 Proteas team after their victory at the ICC Under 19 World Cup in Dubai earlier this month.

The Baby Proteas managed to overcome the "voodoo" which has seemingly surrounded previous South African cricket teams on the big stage.

The team managed to remove the "chokers" tag associated with South African cricket teams at major international tournaments.

Jennings says the country needed a win of this magnitude.

"It's definitely a surprise how the public and the fans have responded to this win. It's amazing to see how desperately our South African public and fans have needed this trophy."

Captain Aiden Markram says coming back to South Africa and seeing the response of the public has been a surreal experience.

"Speaking to some of the players as we got off the bus now, it really has been wild. We had a lap around Newlands, which was amazing, but this has been the cherry on top. We are grateful for it and we appreciate what has gone into organising this for us. So far, it's been a great day."
