ANC investigating violent picture
The picture is of a man wearing ANC regalia holding a gun behind his back.
JOHANNESBURG - The ANC is investigating whether one of its members armed himself when party officials visited Bekkersdal for a door-to-door campaign which later turned violent.
A picture emerged of a man wearing ANC regalia holding a gun behind his back when violence broke out in the township on Thursday.
The ruling party refuses to take responsibility for the photograph.
The image has caused outrage on social media.
"Campaigners there were harassed and one was locked in a shack and other had their t-shirt taken away. Everything was chaotic."
Meanwhile, the ANC on Friday downplayed the violence in the area.
Angry residents took to the streets barricading roads with burning tyres, rocks and rubble.
School pupils, who were still dressed in uniforms, were apparently at the forefront of the protests.
They allegedly forced their classrooms to participate in the demonstration.
At least six people were arrested for public violence.
