Milnerton informal settlers evicted
The municipality obtained a court order to breakdown about 100 shacks that had been illegally erected.
CAPE TOWN - Some Milnerton informal settlers believe they are being treated unfairly after their dwellings were destroyed by city officials on Thursday.
The municipality obtained a court order to breakdown about 100 shacks that had been illegally erected in the Joe Slovo Park area.
This resident says they've been left destitute.
"My house was the first one to be destroyed. I don't have an ID book where I'm standing."
Residents say they have been told to go to Indabeni to pay the fines before their belongings are released.
But, the city's Tandeka Gqada says it won't tolerate land invasions.
"Obviously we expected that people were not going to be unhappy about it, but we were following the court order."
