JOHANNESBURG - Search teams say there's little hope for the families of three boys who were swept away by flood waters in Mamelodi East earlier this week.

Neo Setlhabane, Gomolemo Mangena and Bonolo Malemel, aged between nine and 10, went missing in the township on Monday while playing in a stormwater tunnel.

It's been three days since the boys were last seen by their friends and family, who are hoping and praying for their safe return.

Anxious residents put on their boots and raincoats on Thursday to help officials search for the young boys.

Rescue efforts resumed at the Moretele River not far from where the boys were last seen playing.

Some residents are hoping for the rain to stop so they can help look for the children.

The families say they believe that the trio is safe and will be returned to them.

Emergency teams, police and scores of concerned residents also scoured the area on Wednesday hoping to find the children.

Police have ruled out any foul play.
