Cop faces attempted murder charge
A constable and an office cleaner are accused of severely injuring a suspected robber.
CAPE TOWN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says a Southern Cape constable and a civilian accused of brutality face attempted murder charges when they appear in court later today.
The pair was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a man who was accused of robbery in the Mossel Bay area.
It's alleged that on 21 February the policeman tried to arrest a robbery suspect but the man fought back and stabbed the officer before running away.
The constable then called for back-up and went to look for the suspect.
After tracking him down it's believed the man was kicked and punched.
The victim was then taken to the Kwanonqaba Criminal Investigation Department (CID) offices, where a cleaner also allegedly assaulted him.
He sustained severe head, brain and spinal injuries and remains in a coma.
