JOHANNESBURG - Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba has called on South African football fans to respect the position of Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund.

This amid speculation linking Mashaba with the coaching job.

Igesund has been under fire following Bafana's disappointing exit in January's African Nations Championship, where allegations also surfaced that the 57-year-old coach tried to improperly influence players over their tournament bonuses.

While Mashaba admits he would not turn down the chance to coach the national team, he says the position of the current coach must be respected.

"Let us respect coach Gordon Igesund, because at this point in time he is still the coach of Bafana Bafana. We must respect that."

Mashaba has also called on current players to begin playing for the jersey rather than personal glory.

He says players must realise the effort fans go through when spending their hard-earned money to watch the national team in action.

"When the players take the field they must put their names aside. If you are in the national team, think about the country. If you are in a club, think about your followers. There are people out there that don't eat so they can spend their money to come and watch you."
