CAPE TOWN - Graeme Smith says he's proud of the team despite not getting his fairytale send-off.

The Proteas lost to Australia in the third and final deciding Test at Newlands on Wednesday despite holding on until the end.

South Africa were bowled out for 265 as Australia won the third Test by 245 runs at Newlands on Wednesday, leaving Smith to retire from international cricket with a defeat.

Smith says despite the loss it was an exciting end to his international career.

"We've certainly been outplayed in this Test match, but we still found a way to take it as deep as possible. It would have been a wonderful fairytale if we had hung on there, but I saw enough quality in what the guys showed."

Smith says the Aussies deserved to win the match and the series.

"The certainly deserve the series win. It was all set up for a great match but they outplayed us in this game, they made it count. We were always behind the game and I think Australia played the better cricket throughout."

Smith announced his retirement from international cricket after day three of the Test.
