Witness: I tried to save Reeva

A neighbour, Johan Stipp, provided compelling testimony in the Oscar Pistorius trial.

PRETORIA - Before adjourning for a lunch break, the state called another resident of Silver Woods Country Estate to testify.

Johan Stipp, a radiologist by profession, and his family live in the same complex as Oscar Pistorius.

Stipp said he was 72 metres away from where the shooting took place, which is much closer than the previous three neighbours who have testified.

He also testified he spoke to Pistorius shortly after the shooting while standing next to Steenkamp's body.

He said Pistorius had said, "I shot her. I thought she was a burglar and I shot her."

After being shown a crime scene photograph of Steenkamp's body, Stipp said, "That is the lady I tried to assist."

He said Pistorius had been trying to open her airway with his fingers.

Stipp also tried to do the same, but said he had felt no pulse.

"She was clenching down on Oscar's fingers. I opened her right eyelid. The pupil was fixed, dilated and the cornea was milky. In other words, it was already drying out. For me, it was obvious she was mortally wounded."

Roux said he will present evidence which will prove absolutely that the sounds the athlete's neighbours heard on the day he shot his girlfriend were of a cricket bat hitting a door.

As was the case with previous witnesses, Michelle Burger and her husband Charl Johnson, Stipp says he heard screams just moments after the shots.

He also testified he heard three loud bangs, a fact which is significant as the consensus has been four.

But he defended this by saying he may have missed one as he was asleep.

He will continue with his testimony after the lunch break when court resumes at around 2pm.

Meanwhile, Twitter has exploded with tweets on Stipp's vivid testimony:

Johan Stipp's testimony really paints a vivid picture of that night. It's spine chilling... R. I. P. REEVA STEENKAMPšŸ˜” #OscarPistorius

Johan Stipp knows a lot.. Wow! He's a brave man.

The detail from Johan Stipp is deep, very graphic description of Reeva's wounds yoh

Earlier, Charl Johnson, who lives in the adjacent Silver Stream Estate complex, testified about hearing the noises which he believed were the gunshots which killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Burger also told the court this week about hearing 'blood curdling screams' and four shots from Pistorius's house.

The Paralympic and Olympic athlete denied that Steenkamp's murder was premeditated, saying he mistook her for an intruder.

Johnson said he found it difficult to believe Roux's claims that the sounds he heard was a cricket bat hitting a door and added the quick succession of the sounds was quicker than it would take to swing a bat.

Roux further put it to the witness that the screams he heard were of his client, but Johnson was adamant he heard a woman screaming, but conceded he didn't hear a man and a woman scream at the same time.
