JOHANNESBURG - Metrorail has sent its condolences to the families of two boys who were hit by a train in Boksburg yesterday.

It is believed the pair, aged 15 and 16, stepped off a cart to make it to school on time when they were hit by an oncoming train.

The rail company says heavy rains interfered with operations, leading to a 30-minute delay.

Spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng says Metrorail plans to intensify its rail safety awareness campaigns to prevent further casualties.

"We can never have enough safety awareness. Every Friday we go out to school and communities to educate people."
