US award for Zim human rights lawyer

HARARE - Top Zimbabwe human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa has received an International Woman of Courage award in Washington.

Mtetwa was arrested last year and detained for two weeks on charges of obstructing the course of justice for defending MDC officials picked up during Zimbabwe's referendum.

The case went to trial last year and Mtetwa was cleared.

Mtetwa, who is originally from Swaziland, has been defending journalists and political activists in Zimbabwe for more than a decade.

Yesterday the US State department honoured her and nine other women from countries including Afganistan, India and Ukraine with the awards which are given to women judged to work for peace, justice and human rights.
