SA man still in Equatorial Guinea jail
An SA man is still behind bars in Equatorial Guinea’s Black Beach prison despite being found not guilty.
JOHANNESBURG - The condition of a South African man locked up in one of Africa's most notorious prisons, despite being found not guilty in court, is still unclear.
Daniel Janse van Rensburg was imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea's Black Beach prison in Malabo on 18 December 2013.
He was accused of stealing deposit money to buy an aeroplane by a businessman but was later found not guilty in court.
It's been alleged the businessman exerted his influence to get Janse van Rensburg locked up.
The International Relations Department's spokesperson Clayson Monyela says, "We've spoken to the government there and continue to engage with them. We have appealed to them to release him, even into our care like they've done before. The latest that we've heard is that they'll do that but I'm not sure they've done that yet."
Government officials await correspondence from his jailers.
