JOHANNESBURG - Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the appointment of controversial top cop Robert McBride as head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The announcement comes as no surprise as Members of Parliament (MPs) endorsed the Ekurhuleni metro police chief's appointment in Parliament in January.

McBride was convicted of drunk driving in 2006. But the judgement was later overturned.

Committee chairperson Annelize van Wyk says, "The Portfolio Committee on Police endorsed his appointment during the parliamentary process, so we welcome his appointment. We believe there are a lot of challenges in the IPID and we are looking forward to see and experience the difference that Mr McBride will make."
