CAPE TOWN - A man is in hospital under police guard after he was wounded in a shootout with officers in Manenberg.

Police say the suspect and two others shot and killed a man on Thursday.

When officers tried to apprehend the 25-year-old, he fled.

A gun battle then broke out in which he was wounded.

The police's Frederick van Wyk says, "The suspect kept running while firing at police members. Officers managed to shoot him.

"No police members or bystanders were wounded, only a police vehicle was damaged."

Van Wyk says a 9mm firearm was recovered.

Manenberg has been battling increased gang violence in recent weeks.

Police are maintaining a strong presence in the area as most schools have been affected by violence.
