Manenberg learners return to school
Many pupils stayed away from school over the past two weeks as gang violence escalated.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department says most Manenberg learners have returned to school after being absent for several days this month due to gang violence.
Many parents are reluctant to send their children to school as gang shootings appear to have intensified in the area in recent days.
At least four schools reported attendance of less than 50 percent.
The department's Paddy Attwell says, "We are monitoring the situation in Manenberg on a daily basis. Almost all the schools reported the situation as quiet. We will continue to monitor the situation."
Several people have been killed in gang related violence around Cape Town since the beginning of the year.
Last week, the Western Cape High Court forced the education department to ensure the safety of Manenberg learners.
The department appealed the judgment and it was overturned.
However, they have committed themselves to making the schools safer.
