CT police warn protesters
CT police are on high alert following threats of an illegal march in the city centre.
CAPE TOWN - Cape Town police are on high alert following threats of an illegal march to take place in the city centre today.
Even though city officials have turned down an application by activists to stage a demonstration, protest leaders are adamant the march will go ahead.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer says, "We will deploy officers all over the city. We will make sure that we stop whoever comes to the city to form groups for the march."
The march is aimed to highlight the lack of housing and sanitation.
Protest leader Andile Lili earlier this week said they were ready to face whatever comes their way including arrest.
In October, a housing protest in the city centre turned violent when demonstrators started looting stalls and damaging property.
