JOHANNESBURG - Three police officers are recovering in hospital after an explosion on the N1 highway between Polokwane and Mokopane, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Four policemen and a driver were killed instantly when a truck carrying blasting cartridges caught fire and exploded this morning.

This after a grocery truck smashed into the rear of the explosives vehicle.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha and provincial safety and security MEC Joyce Mashamba were briefed at the scene.

Police spokesperson Ronel Otto says investigations are still underway.

"Officials are still busy on the scene, combing through everything. The road is closed and there's no access for us. Even I'm standing 300 or 400 metres from the scene."

President Jacob Zuma earlier expressed shock and sadness at the news.

He shared government's condolences with those close to the victims.
