CAPE TOWN - More than 66,000 non-profit organisations (NPOs) have yet to submit their annual reports and therefore risk being deregistered, the Social Development Department said on Tuesday.

Minister Bathabile Dlamini urged NPOs to comply with the law by submitting their annual reports before the deadline at the end of March.

The department has been on roadshows around the country to help NPOs comply, educate them on good governance, transparency and accountability.

The department's Mpho Mngxitama says, "When it comes to issues of compliance and legislative issues, there is little knowledge. We go to them [NPOs] and assist them is terms of bookkeeping and how to run organisations."
