JOHANNESBURG - A body of an illegal miner has been recovered from underground where other miners are trapped in a shaft in Roodepoort on Gauteng's West Rand.

Johannesburg Emergency Services say the 18-year-old man was brought to the surface a short while ago.

Rescue operations resumed on Saturday afternoon after they were called off on Friday as officials felt the scene was too dangerous.

It's believed three illegal miners still remain trapped underground.

Emergency service's Nana Radebe says, "The other illegal miners came up with the body of the 18-year-old. He had already died from carbon monoxide gas."

A number of miners were freed in Benoni this week after they were trapped by a rival group.
